Sinds 2008 heeft ze in binnen- en buitenland tentoonstellingen gehad. Hier zie je haar mooie CV. Ze had in Duitsland onder meer les van Georg Baselitz en Daniel Richter. Wij kunnen ons goed voorstellen dat ze daar wegliepen met haar schilderijen en haar typische schildershandschrift, een mengeling van harkerigheid en virtuositeit, en met haar bijzondere kleurenpalet van zwarten, grijzen en opvlammende kleuren.

Sommige schilderijen zijn complex en volledig doorwerkt en omgeploegd. Andere werken zijn in 1 sessie van een aantal gebaren klaar. Je kunt soms het aantal kwaststreken tellen. Werk dat virtuoos en stroef tegelijk is en heerlijk intens geschilderd – het knalt ondanks zijn bescheiden formaat van de wand. Er sluimert een uiterst persoonlijk universum door haar werk dat je niet snel loslaat.

Wij zijn dol op haar gruizige kleuren en haar vlot-stugge manier van schilderen, een soort harkerige schwung zoals in de gitaarsolo’s van Neil Young. IJzersterk. Al jaren willen we graag aandacht besteden aan het werk van Eva Räder en nu is het dan eindelijk zover. Vanuit haar woonplaats Berlijn reageerde de kunstenaar op onze vragen over haar werk.

Onwards and upwards
What are you up to? Do you have plans for new shows or projects?
Yes, this year I am participating in a lot of interesting group shows. We’ve had a group show in Montreal, Dresden, Amsterdam, next weekend on the island of Rügen and later in the year in Mönchengladbach and Frankfurt! I am really happy to have the possibility to show my work in different contexts!

Could you give us an impression of your studio in Berlin?
You can find my studio in a colossus built in the 60’s which used to be part of the Humboldt-Universität in Eastern Berlin, today it is still owned by the City of Berlin. There is a park-like garden and the house itself is so huge, that if you’re not careful, you can easily get lost in there!

Are you happy working and living in Berlin?
Berlin is not the most beautiful city on earth, but it is my city now. I still find it stimulating, even after knowing it for so many years!

Could you tell us something about your daily studio practice?
I start to work on a body of work, then I destroy it, I start to work again, then destroy it, and so on. Now this process is slowly coming to an end and I find new ways to accompany me for new work.

Are books and music important to you?
Yes.
Can you tell us something about your painting process?
I’m afraid I can’t talk about it today. What I can tell today from looking back on my painting process is that it became more slow over time, more personal, and more intense.

How do your collages come about
Sometimes I don’t feel like painting but I still want to play with forms and ideas.

Do your collages relate to your paintings?
They are very different explorations, but of course everything is feeding everything else.
