Wat maakt haar werk zo bijzonder? Er zit een soort gruizige power in die je als een knal voor je kop raakt. De morsige soms wat klunzig geknutselde settings waarin de vaak gezichtsloze ‘modellen’ poseren oogt heel geloofwaardig. De absurde en wrange situaties waarin de modellen ongewone acrobatische poses aannemen of soms opgedwongen lijken te krijgen zijn onweerstaanbaar. Het werk lijkt te gaan over alternatieven voor de klassieke machtsverhouding tussen fotograaf en model en over andere zaken waar je niet zo snel de vinger op legt. We vragen het haar gewoon zelf.
1. Ha Isabelle, kun je iets vertellen over hoe dit werk tot stand is gekomen?
In 2013 I was busy with a series of images were I photographed myself with the auto timer whilebalancing porcelain on foot, leg, back or other body parts. Position_14_2_W_2013 is one of the images of this series. The series was made with the idea to create a figural still life while the image making was highly performative. Doing the shootings not every try was successful and I had a lot of broken dishware. Even from my personal belongings I broke half the dishes and my boyfriend was complaining a lot. So I had to buy quite a lot new stuff in the end. Mostly I regret that I broke one of the vases from my grandmother which was an heirloom. I smashed it without even having had the chance to get a great image of it. Too bad!
2. Waarom laat je juist dit werk zien in de Westergasfabriek?
I decide most of the things out of the instant. I thought that I really would like to see this work again hanging somewhere. And then especially among all the other great works presented at We Like Art. Since the work is quite calm and settled for my way of working I thought it might be looking great at the wall filling installation and the colorful background We Like Art most of the time provides. I’m very much looking forward to see what will accompany my photograph on the wall!

3. Wat maakt deelname aan Start Buying Art aantrekkelijk voor jou als kunstenaar?
On one hand it’s great to get the possibility to show my work to such a broad audience. And especially to an audience that plays with the idea to buy art out of personal reasons, ‘cause they want to have something nice to look at within their private environment or they even totally fall in love with a work. Within the past sales I had with Start Buying Art I personally enjoyed the direct contact to the customers most. If a Gallery is handling the sales you don’t always get the possibility to meet the person that purchased your work and don’t learn where it’s going to hang. I think the acquirer and the artist do have something in common ‘cause they both enjoy looking at the same thing. I appreciate a lot to get into an exchange about ideas and passions.
4. Zou je zelf een kunstwerk van een collega-kunstenaar uit deze tentoonstelling willen kopen?
Yes, I certainly would like to buy a work! I do love the Work of Fleur van Dodewaard and Marieke Gelissen. Too funny they also mentioned me in their interviews. So maybe we could make a deal!
I like that both of them dealing in their own manner with the idea of the moment of creating a piece of art. For me it’s very inspiring to see where the personal sources of creativity are and how you relate to others.
5 Wat zijn je plannen voor het komende half jaar?
In the last 5 years I mainly was photographing within my own studio space. At the moment I’m busy with a new body of work where I’m placing my studio situations outside. Through this I want to get into a new experimental setting where chance and luck will interfere with my actions. This means my private sculptural performances will turn into a public one. This is very interesting to me in respect of experience and outcome. I’m also planning to use several cameras and video to bring along my aspect of performance better.
I’m also looking forward to the new project of Pollys Picture Show at Flex at Foam and my contribution at the photofair Unseen with Galerie Bart.
At the end of the year my work will be shown in a group exhibition at the children museum Villa Zebra in Rotterdam. The open and frank eyes of the children will form a special audience giving me a great chance to reflect on the own work and way of working.
Kom dit werk bekijken in de Westergasfabriek tijdens de aftrap van het nieuwe galerieseizoen. We tonen dan 150 kunstwerken van ruim 100 aanstormende en toonaangevende kunstenaars in de Westergasfabriek. We Like Art organiseert met kunstenaars, uitgevers en topgaleries van 4 t/m 7 september een tentoonstelling gericht op een nieuw publiek van potentiële kunstkopers. Deze unieke verkooptentoonstelling toont werk van kunstenaars met een museale of internationale carrière en jonge kunstenaars waar veel van wordt verwacht. Vrijwel alle werken zijn maximaal € 1.500,- en zijn duidelijk geprijsd. Achter de schermen is de afgelopen tijd hard gewerkt aan een fantastische line-up. De lijst is nog niet helemaal compleet – maar is nu al om van te watertanden.
We werken samen met het Mondriaan Fonds om de zegeningen van de KunstKoop te promoten. Lenen voor je kunstaankoop tegen 0% rente: een prachtige stimulans voor de afname van goede kunst. De rente wordt vergoed door de overheid. Bij de werken in de tentoonstelling staan de maandbedragen die je met de KunstKoop van het Mondriaanfonds kunt afbetalen.
